Social Media While in Retirement

Social Media While in Retirement

156Retirement is made so much more enjoyable with the advent of social media. There are some retirees who will dispute this thought primarily because they have misgivings about the use and benefits obtained from social media. Frankly, most retirees don’t know how they can benefit from social media.

What is social media
Social media encompasses web-based and mobile technologies for social interaction. Many retirees that I speak with believe this is primarily social networking. However, social networking sites are just one element of social media. There are currently six different categories of social media: collaborative projects (e.g., Wikipedia), blogs and microblogs (e.g., WordPress, Twitter), content communities (e.g., YouTube), social networking sites (e.g., Facebook), virtual game worlds (e.g. Social Life), and social markets (e.g. Groupon). These categories will continue to evolve as new forms of collaboration is introduced.

So how do these six social media categories relate to retirement? Knowing a little about each category provides some direction:

Social Media Monitoring by Schools

Social Media Monitoring by Schools

155As if the citizens of the US were not already over monitored by Internet companies, advertisers, phone companies, employers, authorities, cable companies, and oh yes those smart meters, it seems they are starting in on our kids too. Children are being introduced to surveillance on social networks and don’t seem to understand the problem, which makes sense, and by the time they grow up, they will have never lived in a time period that didn’t know everything they did.

In walks 1984, Gatica, Minority Report and Vannevar Bush’s concept of “recording a life” or life-log (read about Bell Labs and his concept). In the near future you don’t just have to worry about your smart phone spying on you, your car will too, every single device you own to simple your life will give away your every move. Your life is hereby recorded, deal with it? Now then, about our children, some say they shouldn’t expect privacy, and since they’ve never known it, why should they even care. Well, that’s just it, not only do they not care, they are growing old enough to vote.

Now then, there was an interesting privacy issue that came to my attention, yes, another one, an article titled; “California school district hires firm to monitor students’ social media,” by Michael Martinez, published on CNN on September 15, 2013. The school is doing this to prevent bullying, but I imagine in the future it will be used to see who posts during school hours to catch kids doing that, or even who logs in during school hours, from there it’s going to be a pre-conditioned reality of the next up and coming generation that “the authorities” have a right to look at your social media, and are at all times.

Social Media Evolution on “Cyber Street”

Social Media Evolution on “Cyber Street”

153These are my thoughts on the Evolution of “Cyber Street”. I have been using and marketing on the internet for over 12 years and have seen a lot of changes. There are billions and billions of dollars floating out there on “Cyber Street” called the Internet. There are so many products, services and opportunities… some good, some not, but it’s still amazing.

I am proud to be a part of this new “Cyber Street” culture where becoming a leader is more important than making the sale. People everywhere, around the world, are looking for a better way to live. They are looking for someone to show them HOW.

Times have changed and with this change the human soul is beginning to awaken and becoming insistent on these changes coming about… Changes that make us feel good about what we do for ourselves and others.

Using Social Media to Grow Your Network Marketing Business

Using Social Media to Grow Your Network Marketing Business

152Have you been wondering how to go about using social media to grow your network marketing business? If you have never tried it before then you are missing out!

Social media allows you to have access to almost anyone in the world from the comfort of your own home. While I do not think it should replace what is done in person and how we work together “belly to belly” as they say, I do know that it is a great way to make new connections and build relationships.

Being Consistent
